FUELING YOUR SUCCESS: Complete Solutions for IFTA Compliance

IFTA: INTERNATIONAL FUEL TAX AGREEMENT

Managing fuel taxes across multiple states can quickly become complicated for trucking companies. The International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) was created to simplify this process by allowing interstate carriers to report and pay fuel taxes through a single base jurisdiction instead of filing separate reports for every state traveled.

If your business operates qualified commercial vehicles across state lines, you are required to maintain an active IFTA account and submit quarterly fuel tax reports.

At Royal Carrier Service, we help carriers stay compliant by managing IFTA registrations, reporting requirements, and renewals so you can stay focused on running your business.

IFTA works alongside IRP registration, which allows you to operate across multiple jurisdictions with apportioned plates. Learn more about IRP apportioned tags here.

Who Needs an IFTA License?

A vehicle must be registered under IFTA if it operates in two or more member jurisdictions and meets any of the following criteria:

  • Has two axles and a gross vehicle weight (GVW) or registered GVW over 26,000 pounds
  • Has three or more axles, regardless of weight
  • Is used in combination with a trailer and has a combined GVW over 26,000 pounds

These vehicles must track fuel purchases and mileage traveled in each jurisdiction to properly calculate fuel tax obligations.

How IFTA Works

Instead of filing fuel tax reports in every state your trucks travel through, IFTA allows carriers to report everything through their base jurisdiction (usually the state where the business is registered).

Your base jurisdiction collects the fuel tax payments and distributes the appropriate amounts to the other states or provinces where the vehicle operated.

This system significantly reduces paperwork and administrative burden for interstate carriers.

IFTA License and Credentials

When your IFTA account is approved, your base jurisdiction will issue:

  • One annual IFTA license
  • Two decals for each qualified vehicle

A copy of the IFTA license must be kept inside each vehicle, while the original can be maintained in the carrier’s records.

These credentials allow your vehicles to legally operate in all IFTA member jurisdictions without needing separate fuel permits for each state.

Quarterly IFTA Reporting

Although the IFTA license is valid from January 1 through December 31, carriers must file quarterly fuel tax reports that include:

  • Total miles traveled in each jurisdiction
  • Fuel purchased in each jurisdiction
  • Total taxable fuel usage

Failure to file reports on time can lead to penalties, interest, or even suspension of your IFTA license.

Royal Carrier Service ensures your reports are filed accurately and on time so your trucks stay on the road without compliance interruptions.
